The Heart of This Journey

Five days in the quiet northeast of Vietnam, at an easy road-trip pace. From Hanoi you head up to the border markets of Lang Son and the karst country of Cao Bang, out to the thundering Ban Gioc Waterfall and Ho Chi Minh’s hideout at Pac Bo, then on to the still green waters of Ba Be Lake.

Here is how the five days unfold, from the morning market in Lang Son to a last browse around Cho Ra market on the way home. Every part of it can be adjusted: add a night where you want to linger, swap an activity or change your hotel class, and we will shape the plan around you.

Day 01:Hanoi – Lang Son – Cao Bang

Leave the capital for the far northeast, a region of limestone mountains, border markets and few other travellers.

Morning

Drive about three hours north from Hanoi on National Highway 1A to Lang Son, a lively border city, and dive into its local market, busy with traders from both sides of the Chinese border.

Afternoon

After lunch, continue through the hills to Cao Bang, a small provincial town close to the Chinese border. Take a short stroll to see the daily life of the mountain peoples who live around it.

Evening

Dinner is served in Cao Bang.

Meals: Lunch, Dinner. Accommodation: Hotel in Cao Bang.

Day 02:Cao Bang – Ban Gioc Waterfall

A drive along the border to Ban Gioc, one of the largest and most beautiful waterfalls in Vietnam.

Morning

Follow the road along the Chinese border through unspoilt countryside of rice fields and towering karst peaks.

Afternoon

At Ban Gioc, the Quay Son River tumbles in wide white curtains over a series of limestone ledges, with the border running right through the falls. Take your time to admire it from different angles, relax by the water or take a swim in the emerald pools.

Late afternoon

Return to Cao Bang to explore more of the town before dinner.

Good to know: the falls are fullest in the rainy season, from around June to September, and swimming depends on the water level.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner. Accommodation: Hotel in Cao Bang.

Day 03:Cao Bang – Pac Bo Cave – Ba Be Lake

A pilgrimage to Pac Bo, then on to the lakes and forests of Ba Be National Park.

Early morning

Set off early, driving north towards the Chinese border, with stops at village markets where hill tribe families come to buy, sell and barter.

Morning

Reach Pac Bo, where Ho Chi Minh lived and worked in a small cave when he returned to Vietnam in 1941 after three decades abroad. It was here that he founded the Viet Minh and planned the struggle for independence. The setting is beautiful, with a clear stream he named Lenin Stream at the foot of Karl Marx Mountain.

Afternoon

After lunch, drive back through Cao Bang and on to Ba Be National Park.

Evening

On arrival, meet your Tay host family and spend the night in their traditional stilt house, sharing dinner with them.

Good to know: homestays are simple, usually with shared sleeping areas and bathrooms.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner. Accommodation: Homestay in Ba Be.

Day 04:Ba Be Lake – Dau Dang Waterfall

A day on and around Ba Be Lake, the largest natural lake in Vietnam, framed by forested limestone mountains.

Morning

After breakfast, set off on a three-hour boat trip across the lake, with views of the mountains rising straight from the water. Take a short trek to Dau Dang Waterfall, where the Nang River rushes over a series of rocky rapids.

Afternoon

Enjoy a picnic lunch along the way, then visit villages of the Tay and Dao people to see how they farm, weave and live.

Evening

Return to your Tay village for dinner and a second night with your hosts.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner. Accommodation: Homestay in Ba Be.

Day 05:Ba Be – Bac Kan – Hanoi

A local market, then the drive back to the capital.

Morning

After breakfast, browse Cho Ra market, where people from the surrounding villages come to trade.

Afternoon

Drive back to Hanoi, stopping along the way for photos, sightseeing and lunch.

Late afternoon

Arrive back in Hanoi, where your tour ends.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch.
