A border province of karst hills, caves and busy markets on the road from Hanoi to Cao Bang. Here is what is worth a stop and what you can skip.
Lang Son is a province on Vietnam's north-eastern border with China, long a crossroads for trade and armies moving between the two countries. The Huu Nghi or Friendship Gate border crossing lies just north of the provincial city, and the busy markets show it: goods flow across the border every day, along with Tay and Nung communities whose villages dot the valleys.
For travellers, Lang Son is mostly a stop on the way to Cao Bang and Ban Gioc. Its limestone caves and markets fill a few hours, and the Bac Son valley, with rice fields and stilt houses below a steep peak, is the most beautiful corner of the province. In winter, the cool heights of Mau Son mountain draw Vietnamese visitors hoping for frost.
Our private, tailor-made journeys can include a stop in Lang Son or a night in Bac Son on the way to Cao Bang.
