The Heart of This Journey

Four days among the limestone islands of the Gulf of Tonkin, by boat, by kayak and on foot. The journey starts with a night on a cruise in Halong Bay, crosses to the laid-back island of Cat Ba for two nights, and gives you a choice of a jungle trek in the national park or a bike ride through a fishing village before the return to Hanoi.

Here is how the four days unfold, from your first glimpse of Halong Bay’s islands to the speedboat ride back across the water to the mainland. Every part of it can be adjusted: add a night where you want to linger, swap an activity or change your hotel class, and we will shape the plan around you.

Day 01:Hanoi – Halong Bay – Overnight on Cruise

Swap the city for Halong Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage Site of limestone islands rising from emerald water. Legend says the Jade Emperor sent a dragon down from heaven, and the pearls it sprayed from its mouth became the islands.

Morning

After breakfast, leave Hanoi for the drive to the coast and board your boat.

Midday

Settle in over lunch as the boat sails out among the islands.

Afternoon

Climb into a kayak and paddle across the calm water, slipping between towering karsts and into quiet corners of the bay. Each turn brings a new view, from hidden beaches to caves and floating villages, and from water level the cliffs feel even taller.

Evening

Dinner is served on board, and the night is spent on the water, with the lights of other boats twinkling among the islands.

Good to know: kayaking depends on the weather and sea conditions.

Day 02:Halong Bay – Cat Ba Island

A sunrise on the bay, then a ferry across to the island of Cat Ba.

Early morning

Rise early for tai chi on the top deck, or simply watch the sun come up over the islands with a cup of coffee or tea.

Morning

Row out to the nearby islands, then return on board for brunch and relax on the sundeck as the boat cruises slowly back past the bay’s extraordinary rock formations.

Afternoon

Take the ferry to Cat Ba Island, a laid-back place of small beaches, forested hills and a fishing harbour. The rest of the day is at leisure: stroll along the waterfront, try some fresh seafood or simply relax by the beach.

Meals: Brunch. Accommodation: Hotel in Cat Ba.

Day 03:Cat Ba Half-Day Tour

A half day to explore Cat Ba, choosing between a trek in the national park and a bike ride through a fishing village.

Morning

If you choose the trek in Cat Ba National Park, set off after an early breakfast and drive around the island to Hospital Cave, where a three-storey building was hidden inside the mountain during the American War to shelter and treat the wounded. See the stone beds and stalactites and hear the legends of the cave. Continue to the national park, part of a UNESCO biosphere reserve, where an exhibition introduces Cat Ba’s plants, wildlife and ancient fossils. Walk through the forest and climb to the top of Ngu Lam peak for a panoramic view over the bay, then trek for about an hour through the Kim Giao forest.

Midday

Stop for lunch on the way back to the hotel, then relax on the beach.

Morning

If you prefer a bike ride, transfer after breakfast to Ben Beo Harbour and take a boat to Viet Hai, a small fishing village strung along the coast about 18 kilometres from Cat Ba town. Cycle through the village to watch fishermen at work and farmers in the rice fields, stopping to chat with the villagers, before the boat back to the Cat Ba wharf. You return to the hotel in the afternoon, with the rest of the day at leisure.

Day 04:Cat Ba – Hai Phong – Hanoi

Back across the water to the mainland and on to Hanoi.

Morning

After breakfast, take a speedboat across to Ben Binh pier in Hai Phong.

Departure

Your car is waiting at the pier for the drive back to your hotel in Hanoi.
