Three days in the wild northeast of Vietnam, on winding mountain roads far from the usual trail. You drive from Hanoi through Lang Son to Cao Bang, stand beneath the thundering Ban Gioc Waterfall on the Chinese border, then spend a night with a Tay family beside Ba Be Lake in Bac Kan province before a morning on the water.

Here is how the three days unfold, from the border market of Lang Son to a boat ride across the still waters of Ba Be Lake. Every part of it can be adjusted: add a night where you want to linger, swap an activity or change your hotel class, and we will shape the plan around you.

Day 01:Hanoi – Lang Son – Cao Bang

Leave the capital behind and head north into the mountains along the Chinese border.

Morning

Depart Hanoi for the drive of about three hours along National Highway 1A to Lang Son, a busy border city, and wander through its local market, where traders from both sides of the border buy and sell.

Afternoon

After lunch, continue on spectacular mountain roads to Cao Bang, with views over lush valleys, small hamlets and distant limestone peaks.

Late afternoon

On arrival in Cao Bang, a small town close to the border, take a short walk to meet some of the mountain peoples who live in the area.

Evening

Dinner is served in town.

Good to know: today covers about 300 kilometres on good but winding roads.

Meals: Lunch, Dinner. Accommodation: Hotel in Cao Bang.

Day 02:Cao Bang – Ban Gioc Waterfall – Nguom Ngao Cave – Ba Be Lake

The highlight of the trip: the great waterfall on the Chinese border, then on to the lakes and forests of Ba Be.

Morning

After breakfast, drive towards Trung Khanh district on the border with China. On the way, stop at Phuc Sen, a Nung village famous for the farming tools forged by its blacksmiths. Like their Tay neighbours, the Nung people live mostly from rice, and their terraced paddies line the road all the way to Ban Gioc.

Late morning

Arrive at Ban Gioc Waterfall, where the Quay Son River tumbles over wide limestone tiers into a broad pool that marks the border between Vietnam and China. Take your time to soak up the scene, often called the most beautiful waterfall in Vietnam.

Afternoon

Nearby, step inside Nguom Ngao, the Tiger Cave, a vast cavern known for its glittering limestone formations. Then drive on to Ba Be Lake.

Evening

Spend the night with a Tay family in their traditional stilt house by the lake, unwinding over a home-cooked dinner of local dishes.

Good to know: this is a long day of about 300 kilometres on winding, bumpy mountain roads. The homestay is simple and comfortable, with shared facilities.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner. Accommodation: Homestay at Ba Be Lake.

Day 03:Ba Be Lake – Puong Cave – Hanoi

A peaceful morning on Ba Be Lake, surrounded by forested limestone mountains, then the drive back to Hanoi.

Morning

Board a boat on Ba Be Lake, at the heart of Ba Be National Park. Relax on deck, look out for wildlife on the forested karst cliffs, or slip into the clean, cool water for a swim. Your boat follows the Nang River into Puong Cave, a tunnel carved through the mountain by the river, hung with stalactites and home to a colony of thousands of bats.

Afternoon

After lunch, set off on the drive of about 220 kilometres back to Hanoi, with a stop at the tea plantations in the hills along the way, before arriving at your hotel or onward destination in the city.
