Your train arrives in Lao Cai early in the morning. Lao Cai is a lovely hilltop town close to the Chinese border. Explore downtown and eat at a local noodle house for breakfast. Your driver and guide will take you to one of the local markets after breakfast (Coc Ly on Tuesday, Sin Cheng or Cao Son on Wednesday, Lung Khau Nhin on Thursday, Can Cau on Saturday, and Bac Ha or Muong Hum on Sunday). Explore the stalls filled with handcrafted goods sold by the various hill tribe peoples who come here to buy and sell their wares. In the afternoon, continue your journey to Sapa, the premier travel destination in Northwest Vietnam, known for its breathtaking views of cloud-woven mountaintops and gaping valleys.

The French dubbed the Sapa area the “Tonkinese Alps” after the Tonkin region of northern Vietnam.
Hotel breakfast. Leave the hotel at 10:00 a.m. and begin your trek. Leave town by walking through the local market. After a few minutes, you’ll see a road leading downhill to Cat Cat Village. The Black Hmong village is well-known for its brocade weaving and gold and silver jewelry making. The walk to Cat Cat Village and its surrounding hills allows you to see farms and techniques used by the locals. A brief stop at a waterfall and a hydroelectric station is made. After that, return to town and spend the rest of the day at leisure.

After breakfast in town, take a trail down the valley through rice paddy terraces, taking in the spectacular scenery along the way. When you reach the narrow river at the valley’s bottom, walk along its bank for a while until you reach the Black H’mong minority village of Y Linh Ho. You’ll get a firsthand look into their lives and traditions, hear stories, and have a great time socializing.
Take a break before continuing on to the Muong Hoa Valley. Following more rice terraces with spectacular mountain scenery, you will pass through Lao Chai Village of the Black H’mong minority and Ta Van Village of the Zay minority. If the weather permits, you can even go swimming in the nearby river. Make your way to the main road to meet your driver. Spend a few hours relaxing in Sapa Town before transferring to Lao Cai and boarding a night train back to Hanoi.
