Five days in the misty mountains of the far north, travelling by night train. You visit a colourful hill tribe market near the Chinese border, then walk from Sapa through rice terraces and the villages of the Black Hmong and Giay peoples, at a gentle walking pace.

Here is how the five days unfold, from the night train out of Hanoi to a last walk along the river in the Muong Hoa Valley. Every part of it can be adjusted: add a night where you want to linger, swap an activity or change your hotel class, and we will shape the plan around you.

Day 01:Hanoi – Night Train to Lao Cai

Leave the capital behind for an overnight journey into the mountains of the north.

Evening

Your driver collects you from your hotel in Hanoi and takes you to the railway station, where you board the night train to Lao Cai. Settle into your air-conditioned soft sleeper cabin and let the rhythm of the rails carry you north.

Good to know: the standard booking is a berth in a shared four-berth cabin. A private four-berth or two-berth cabin can be booked for a supplement.

Accommodation: Sleeper train to Lao Cai.

Day 02:Lao Cai – Hill Tribe Market – Sapa

A morning among the stalls of a hill tribe market, then up into the mountains to Sapa.

Early morning

Your train arrives in Lao Cai, a border town on the Red River facing China, early in the morning. Take a stroll through town and enjoy breakfast at a local noodle house.

Morning

Your driver and guide take you to one of the region’s weekly markets, where Hmong, Dao, Tay and other hill tribe peoples gather in their brightest clothes to buy and sell embroidered textiles, livestock, produce and handmade goods.

Afternoon

Continue up the mountain to Sapa, the best-known destination in northwest Vietnam, with its views of cloud-wrapped peaks and deep valleys.

Good to know: each market runs on one day of the week: Coc Ly on Tuesday, Sin Cheng or Cao Son on Wednesday, Lung Khau Nhin on Thursday, Can Cau on Saturday, and Bac Ha or Muong Hum on Sunday. We build your plan around the market that matches your travel dates.

Day 03:Sapa – Cat Cat Village

The French called these mountains the Tonkinese Alps, and today you set out to explore them on foot.

Morning

After breakfast, set off from your hotel through Sapa’s local market and follow the road downhill to Cat Cat, a Black Hmong village known for its brocade weaving and its silver and gold jewellery. Along the way, see the small farms on the hillsides and how the villagers work the land. Pause at a waterfall and an old hydroelectric station before climbing back to town.

At leisure

The rest of the day is yours to explore Sapa at your own pace.

Day 04:Sapa – Y Linh Ho – Lao Chai – Ta Van – Night Train to Hanoi

A full day on foot through the terraced Muong Hoa Valley, one of the most beautiful walks in northern Vietnam.

Morning

After breakfast, follow a trail down the valley through rice terraces, with mountain views at every turn. At the bottom, walk along the bank of a narrow river to Y Linh Ho, a Black Hmong village, where you can meet local families, hear their stories and learn about their traditions.

Midday

Stop for a picnic lunch with a view over the terraces.

Afternoon

Continue into the Muong Hoa Valley, passing through Lao Chai, another Black Hmong village, and Ta Van, home to the Giay people. If the weather allows, cool off with a swim in the river, then walk up to the main road where your driver is waiting.

Evening

Relax for a few hours in Sapa before transferring to Lao Cai to board the night train back to Hanoi.

Day 05:Hanoi Arrival

Back in the capital as the city wakes up.

Your train arrives at Hanoi Railway Station early in the morning, where your journey with us comes to an end.
