The Heart of This Journey

Five days overland through Cambodia’s remote northeast, off the usual tourist trail. This journey follows the Mekong north from Phnom Penh to the river dolphins of Kratie, climbs into the red-earth hills, forests and crater lake of Ratanakiri, then sweeps west to the clifftop temple of Preah Vihear before ending in Siem Reap.

Here is how the five days unfold, from a first taste of fried spider in Skuon to the clifftop temple of Preah Vihear. Every part of it can be adjusted: add a night where you want to linger, swap an activity or change your hotel class, and we will shape the plan around you.

Day 01:Phnom Penh – Skuon – Kampong Cham – Kratie

North out of the capital, following the Mekong through the Cambodian countryside to the riverside town of Kratie.

Morning

Leave Phnom Penh and make your first stop in Skuon, the town famous for one of Cambodia’s more exotic delicacies: deep-fried tarantula. Be brave and try one. Continue to Kampong Cham to see its colonial architecture and Wat Nokor, where a modern pagoda stands inside the walls of an Angkor-era temple of sandstone and laterite.

Midday

Lunch is served at a local restaurant.

Late afternoon

Drive on to Kratie and then north along quiet country roads to a riverside viewpoint where the rare freshwater Irrawaddy dolphins surface in the Mekong. Late afternoon into sunset is the best time to see them.

Evening

Return to Kratie and take a small ferry across to Koh Trong, a peaceful island in the middle of the Mekong opposite the town, where dinner and your bed for the night are waiting.

Good to know: for a slower start, you can travel the first part of the way by river cruise from Phnom Penh to Peam Chikong, about six hours with breakfast and lunch on board, at extra cost. Rajabori Villas has only ten rooms, so book early.

Meals: Lunch, Dinner. Accommodation: Rajabori Villas on Koh Trong Island, Kratie.

Day 02:Kratie – Stung Treng – Ratanakiri

Deeper into the northeast, to the red-earth highlands of Ratanakiri.

Morning

After breakfast, drive for about three hours to Stung Treng, a quiet provincial town just 50 kilometres from the Lao border where a tributary meets the Mekong, showing the remote and authentic face of Cambodia.

Midday

Stop for lunch at a local restaurant.

Afternoon

Continue for about two and a half hours to Banlung, the capital of Ratanakiri, nicknamed the Red City for the rust-red laterite earth that colours its roads and houses. Check in to Terres Rouges Lodge, a beautiful house of fine tropical woods set by a lake in its own leafy garden.

Evening

Dinner is served at the lodge.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner. Accommodation: Terres Rouges Lodge in Banlung, Ratanakiri.

Day 03:Ratanakiri Discovery

A full day among the forests, rivers and minority villages of Ratanakiri.

Morning

Head northwest through bamboo forests to Voeun Sai on the bank of the Se San River, with a pretty view across to the Chinese village on the far side. Its families have lived here since the 1930s, and many still speak Chinese rather than Khmer. Upstream lies Kaoh Peak, a village of the Kachok people, known for the carved wooden statues that guard their graves.

Afternoon

Drive back towards Banlung through rubber plantations to the Teuk Cha Ong waterfall, tumbling through the forest.

Late afternoon

Finish at Yeak Laom, a perfectly round crater lake surrounded by forest, for a late afternoon swim in its calm, clear water.

Evening

Dinner is served at the lodge.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner. Accommodation: Terres Rouges Lodge in Banlung, Ratanakiri.

Day 04:Ratanakiri – Stung Treng – Tbeng Meanchey – Preah Vihear

A long and rewarding day on the road, west across the Mekong towards the temple country of the north.

Morning

After breakfast, drive through lovely open countryside back to Stung Treng, about 140 kilometres away, for lunch at a local restaurant.

Afternoon

Cross the Mekong and continue for about 160 kilometres to Tbeng Meanchey. Here, at the silk weaving centre founded by textile designer Carol Cassidy, a community of landmine survivors builds a sustainable living through traditional weaving, with much of their silk exported abroad.

Late afternoon

Drive on for about an hour to Sra Em and your hotel near the foot of Preah Vihear.

Evening

Dinner is served at the hotel.

Good to know: this is a full day of driving, around six hours in all. The weaving centre is open Monday to Friday and closed on weekends and public holidays.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner. Accommodation: Preah Vihear Boutique Hotel, Sra Em.

Day 05:Preah Vihear Temple – Siem Reap

A morning at one of the most dramatically sited temples in the Khmer world, then on to Siem Reap.

Morning

Drive about 25 kilometres north to the foot of the mountain and switch to a pickup truck for the steep climb to Prasat Preah Vihear. An important place of pilgrimage in the Angkorian era, the temple was built over the reigns of several Khmer kings. Like other mountain temples, it represents Mount Meru, home of the gods, and was dedicated to Shiva. From the edge of the cliff, the plains stretch away as far as the eye can see.

Midday

Return to your hotel for lunch.

Afternoon

Drive to Siem Reap via Anlong Veng, where your journey with us comes to an end.

Good to know: this tour ends on arrival in Siem Reap; dinner and accommodation there are not included, and can be added or combined with an Angkor tour.
