Detailed Itinerary:

After a day in Urumqi you head into the Tianshan and then west and north through the desert landscapes of Karamay to the Altai mountains. Two days around Kanas Lake and Hemu are followed by a scenic return to the capital through Altay and the desert. Every part of it can be adjusted: add a night, swap a visit or change the hotel class, and we will shape the plan around you.

Day 01:Arrival In Urumqi

Arrive in the capital of Xinjiang and taste its markets.

Arrival

Your private guide and driver meet you at Urumqi airport and take you to your hotel. Urumqi lies on the northern side of the Tianshan mountains and has long been a meeting point of Central Asian and Chinese cultures.

Afternoon

Visit the International Grand Bazaar in the Erdaoqiao area, where domed buildings and a tall minaret-style tower rise over lanes of stalls. Browse dried fruit and nuts, embroidered textiles, carpets, knives and musical instruments, and stop for a skewer of grilled lamb or a warm naan from the oven.

Accommodation: Hotel in Urumqi.

Day 02:Heavenly Lake - Dushanzi Grand Canyon

An alpine lake beneath snowy peaks, then a deep canyon carved into the foothills.

Morning

Drive east into the Tianshan to Heavenly Lake, a clear alpine lake ringed by spruce forest beneath the snows of Bogda Peak. The Tianshan range is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Walk along the shore and take in the reflections of the mountains in the water.

Afternoon

After lunch, set off west by private car to Dushanzi and the Dushanzi Grand Canyon, where meltwater from the Tianshan has cut a deep, sheer-sided gorge through layered rock. Walk along the rim and look down into the steep folds and gullies far below.

Evening

Check in to your hotel in Dushanzi for the night.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch. Accommodation: Hotel in Dushanzi (Kanas).

Day 03:Karamay: Black Oil Mountain, Ghost City And Colourful Beach - Burqin

A day of strange desert landscapes on the long road north to Burqin.

Morning

Drive north into the Karamay area to Black Oil Mountain, a low hill where natural crude oil has seeped to the surface for thousands of years, forming dark pools and tar. It is the reason the city of Karamay exists, and its name means black oil in the Uyghur language.

Midday

Continue to Urho Ghost City, a wind-eroded landscape of sandstone mesas, towers and ridges that look like ruined castles. When the wind moans through the formations, you will understand where the name comes from.

Afternoon

Your last stop is the Colourful Beach, where eroded hills in bands of red, yellow and purple rise beside the Irtysh River, best seen in the late light. Then drive on to Burqin, a long day of travel of around 470 kilometres in all.

Good to know: This is a long day on the road. Your driver will stop for breaks along the way, and it is worth bringing snacks, water and sun protection.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch. Accommodation: Hotel in Burqin (Kanas).

Day 04:Kanas Lake - Hemu Village

A glacial lake in the far north of China and a night in a mountain village of log houses.

Morning

Drive from Burqin into the Altai mountains to Kanas Lake, a long glacial lake in a valley of larch and birch forest near the borders with Kazakhstan, Russia and Mongolia. Walk along the river trails that lead to the lake, past viewpoints such as the bends of the river known as Moon Bay and Fairy Bay, where the water glows a milky turquoise.

Afternoon

Continue by road to Hemu Village, a small settlement of wooden log houses in a wide mountain valley. Many of its families are Tuvan, and life here follows the seasons of herding.

Evening

Settle into your guesthouse and enjoy the evening quiet, with woodsmoke rising over the meadows.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch. Accommodation: Hotel in Hemu Village (Kanas).

Day 05:Hemu Grasslands - Altay

Morning mist over the grasslands, then a mountain road south to Altay.

Early morning

Rise early and climb to a viewing point above Hemu as the mist lifts off the valley, revealing the log houses, birch woods and grasslands below. Walk down through the meadows and along the river, where horses and cattle graze.

Afternoon

After lunch, drive the Ahe Highway towards Altay, a scenic mountain road that winds through forest, river valleys and open pasture. Herders’ felt tents and log cabins dot the slopes, and your driver will stop whenever the view calls for it.

Evening

Arrive in Altay and check in to your hotel.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch. Accommodation: Hotel in Altay (Kanas).

Day 06:Altay - Urumqi Via The Desert Highway

A long drive across the Gurbantunggut Desert back to the capital.

Morning

Set off south on the S21 Desert Highway, a modern road that crosses the Gurbantunggut Desert, the second largest desert in China. Watch the land change from grassland to rolling dunes and scrub, with wide skies all around. Hardy saxaul shrubs and tamarisk anchor the sand, and in spring the desert floor can be touched with green.

Afternoon

Stop along the way for lunch and short breaks to stretch your legs and take in the open landscape.

Late afternoon

Arrive back in Urumqi and enjoy the evening at leisure.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch. Accommodation: Hotel in Urumqi.
