Xinjiang's modern capital and the gateway to its mountains, deserts and Silk Road towns. Here is how to spend a day or two in the city, how to visit Heavenly Lake in the Tianshan and when the weather is kindest.
Urumqi is the capital of Xinjiang and its main transport hub, a large, modern city at the northern foot of the Tianshan range. It is often described as the city furthest from any sea, and it feels like a crossroads: Uyghur, Han, Kazakh, Hui and other communities live here, and you will hear many languages in its markets and streets.
Most travellers use Urumqi as a starting point rather than a destination in itself, but it deserves a day. The Xinjiang Museum is one of the best introductions to the region's Silk Road past, and the Grand Bazaar gives a lively taste of local food and crafts. The real highlight is Heavenly Lake, an alpine lake about two hours away beneath the snowy summit of Bogda Peak.
Two nights is usually enough: one day for the museum and bazaar, and one for Heavenly Lake or the Southern Pastures. From here, journeys continue by high-speed train to Turpan, or by air to Kashgar, Kanas and Dunhuang. If you are arriving on a long flight from eastern China or abroad, an extra night here gives you time to rest and adjust to the later rhythm of the day, as meals, shops and sunsets in Xinjiang all run noticeably later than in Beijing or Shanghai.
Our Urumqi journeys are private and tailor-made, usually as the starting point for Turpan, Kashgar, Kanas or a wider Silk Road route.

Heavenly Lake is part of the Xinjiang Tianshan UNESCO World Heritage Site, inscribed in 2013. A little planning makes a big difference to the day.
Leave Urumqi early to reach the lake before the tour coaches. The light on Bogda Peak is often clearest in the morning.
Park shuttle buses take you up from the entrance. From there, lakeside paths and viewpoints are easy to explore, and boat trips run in summer.
The lake sits at around 1,900 metres and is noticeably cooler than the city. Bring a warm layer and a rain jacket, even in July.
The experiences our travellers enjoy most, in order of what we would not miss.
A clear alpine lake in the Tianshan, ringed by spruce forest and overlooked by the glaciers of Bogda Peak. A full day trip from the city, best from late spring to early autumn.
The regional museum covers the Silk Road, the peoples of Xinjiang and the region's archaeology, including well-known mummies preserved by the desert. Allow two to three hours.
A large market area of shops and stalls selling dried fruit, nuts, spices, carpets, knives and musical instruments, with food stalls nearby. Lively in the late afternoon and evening.
Green valleys and meadows in the hills south of the city, where Kazakh herders traditionally graze their animals in summer. A pleasant half day of walking and fresh air.
A small hill of red rock in the city with a pagoda on top and wide views across Urumqi to the mountains on clear days.
Join locals for lamb skewers, hand-pulled noodles and naan at the night food streets. Many dishes are generously sized, so order to share.

Ask us on WhatsAppBy road, about 110 km and roughly 2 hours each way. At the scenic area entrance, park shuttle buses take visitors up to the lake. Most travellers go as a full day trip with a private car and guide, leaving early to beat the crowds and enjoy the morning light.
As a gateway, yes. A day for the Xinjiang Museum and the Grand Bazaar, and a day for Heavenly Lake, give a good introduction to the region. The city itself is modern, so most travellers continue on to Turpan, Kashgar or Kanas for older towns and wilder landscapes.
June to September, when the meadows are green, the paths are clear of snow and boat trips run. July and August are the busiest months. In winter the lake freezes and the area is very cold, though snowy scenery has its own appeal.
Two nights is enough for most travellers: one full day for the museum and bazaar, and one for Heavenly Lake or the Southern Pastures. If you arrive late from eastern China, add an extra night to rest before continuing your journey.
