A glacial lake and log-cabin villages in the Altai Mountains of northern Xinjiang, at their finest in golden autumn. Here is when to go, how to get there and how long to stay.
Kanas lies in the far north of Xinjiang, in the Altai Mountains close to the borders with Kazakhstan, Russia and Mongolia. Its centrepiece is Kanas Lake, a long, deep glacial lake whose water shifts from milky green to deep blue, framed by larch, spruce and birch forest. The river below it winds through a series of bends, including the famous Moon Bay and Fairy Bay.
Nearby, Hemu village is a scattering of wooden log houses in a wide valley, home to Tuvan and Kazakh families who herd livestock in summer pastures. Early mornings, when mist drifts over the roofs and smoke rises from chimneys, are magical. The season is short, and the golden colours of late September draw large crowds, so planning and timing matter here.
Our Kanas journeys are private and tailor-made, usually part of a wider northern Xinjiang route from Urumqi, with your own guide and driver.

The experiences our travellers enjoy most, in order of what we would not miss.
Walk the lakeshore boardwalks or take a boat on the lake to see its colours change with the light, and the forested slopes rising to the Altai peaks.
Along the river below the lake, viewpoints look over crescent-shaped bends of green water and islands of forest. They are best in the soft light of early morning.
Climb the many steps to this hilltop viewpoint for a sweeping view along the length of Kanas Lake and the surrounding mountains on a clear day.
Rise early and walk up to the viewing platform above Hemu to watch mist lift from the valley, the log houses and the golden birch trees.
In the villages you may see traditional log homes, horses and herding life, and in some places hear local music played on traditional instruments. Your guide helps with respectful introductions.

Customise My TripMost travellers fly from Urumqi to Kanas Airport near Burqin, then continue by road. Driving the whole way from Urumqi is possible but takes a very long day or two. Private vehicles stop at the park gate, where you transfer to the official shuttle buses.

The season runs from about June to early October. Summer brings green meadows and wildflowers, while mid-September to early October is the famous golden season of larch and birch. Winter is long, snowy and very cold, when most travellers stay away, though some come for snow scenery.

Ask us on WhatsAppMid-September to early October is the classic time, when the larch and birch turn gold. Summer, from June to August, is green and mild with wildflowers. The golden season is short and very popular, so book well ahead and avoid the October national holiday if you can.
The usual route is a flight from Urumqi to Kanas Airport, about one and a half hours, followed by around two and a half to three hours by road. From the park gate, official shuttle buses take you into the scenic area. Driving all the way from Urumqi is a very long journey.
Yes. Hemu is one of the highlights of the region, and staying overnight lets you see it at dawn, when mist hangs over the log houses and the valley is quiet. Day visitors arrive later, so the early morning is the most peaceful time to walk and photograph.
Allow about three nights in the area to see Kanas Lake, its river bays and Hemu village without rushing, plus travel days from Urumqi. Many travellers combine Kanas with other parts of northern Xinjiang on a longer private road trip.
