Detailed Itinerary:

Here is how the ten days unfold, from your first sunset over the Mekong from Mount Phousi to the roar of Khone Phapheng Falls. Every part of it can be adjusted: add a night where you want to linger, swap an activity or change your hotel class, and we will shape the plan around you.

Day 01:Luang Prabang Arrival – World Heritage Town

Welcome to Luang Prabang, a small royal town of golden monasteries and French colonial houses where the Mekong meets the Nam Khan River.

Arrival

Your guide and driver meet you at the airport and take you to your hotel to check in.

Afternoon

Set out to explore the old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visit Wat Visoun, with its distinctive rounded stupa, and Wat Aham, then the beautiful Wat Xieng Thong, whose sweeping roofs almost touch the ground, before strolling along the main street to Wat Mai.

Late afternoon

Climb the steps of Mount Phousi for the sunset, with the broad Mekong and the smaller Nam Khan spread out below.

Evening

Wander through the Night Market, where Hmong and Lao craftspeople from the surrounding hills lay out their handwoven textiles, then sit down to a welcome dinner.

Meals: Dinner. Accommodation: Hotel in Luang Prabang.

Day 02:Luang Prabang – Mekong River Cruise – Pak Ou Caves

A day on the Mekong by private longboat, with riverside villages and a cliff full of Buddhas.

Morning

After breakfast, transfer to the pier and board your private longboat for the trip upriver. Stop along the way at Ban Xang Hai, a lowland Lao village where you can watch lao lao, the local rice whisky, being distilled, and if you wish, visit Muang Kham as well.

Afternoon

Continue to the Pak Ou Caves and climb into Tham Ting, the lower cave, filled with thousands of Buddha images left by pilgrims over the centuries. Then cross the Mekong to the village of Ban Pak Ou. On the way back downstream, stop at Ban Xang Khong, a village known for hand-woven silk and saa paper made from mulberry bark.

Meals: Breakfast. Accommodation: Hotel in Luang Prabang.

Day 03:Luang Prabang – Nature Experience

A gentle half day in the countryside around Luang Prabang, with time to yourself afterwards.

Morning

Head out into the countryside for a half-day tour with easy activities that bring you close to local people and nature. Visit a weaving village, then the Elephant Park Project on the Nam Khan River, where you meet the elephants and take a ride. Continue to Tad Sae Waterfall and see something of everyday life in the villages along the way.

At leisure

The rest of the day is yours to relax or explore Luang Prabang at your own pace.

Good to know: in the dry season Tad Sae has little or no water. Many travellers now prefer to watch, feed or walk with the elephants rather than ride them, and we can arrange that instead. Other half-day nature tours are also available.

Meals: Breakfast. Accommodation: Hotel in Luang Prabang.

Day 04:Luang Prabang – Alms Giving – Kuang Si Waterfalls

A morning with the monks of Luang Prabang, then an afternoon by the turquoise pools of Kuang Si.

Early morning

Rise before dawn to take part in the alms giving, as lines of saffron-robed monks walk barefoot through the quiet streets to receive offerings of sticky rice, and receive a blessing in return.

Morning

After breakfast at your hotel, visit the National Museum in the former Royal Palace, with its collection of royal treasures and gifts from around the world.

Afternoon

Drive out to Kuang Si, stopping on the way at Hmong and Khmu villages to learn about their way of life and how their cultures differ from that of the lowland Lao. At the falls, swim in the turquoise pools, follow the paths beside the cascades or simply relax in the shade before returning to town in the late afternoon.

Good to know: the National Museum is closed on Tuesdays, and modest dress and a respectful distance are expected during the alms giving.

Meals: Breakfast. Accommodation: Hotel in Luang Prabang.

Day 05:Luang Prabang – Vang Vieng

A road trip south through the mountains to a riverside town set among limestone peaks.

Morning

After breakfast, leave Luang Prabang by car for Vang Vieng. The road winds through spectacular mountain scenery, with stops at villages along the way.

Afternoon

Take a walk through the dramatic karst landscape around Vang Vieng, where green rice fields sit beneath towering limestone cliffs, and explore some of the caves in the surrounding hills.

Meals: Breakfast. Accommodation: Hotel in Vang Vieng.

Day 06:Vang Vieng – Vientiane

On to Vientiane, the most relaxed of Southeast Asia’s capitals, set on a bend of the Mekong.

Morning

After breakfast, drive by minivan to Vientiane and check in at your hotel.

Afternoon

Begin your tour at Wat Sisaket, whose cloister walls are lined with thousands of miniature Buddha images, and Haw Phra Kaew, the former royal temple that once housed the famous Emerald Buddha. On the way to Pha That Luang, the great golden stupa and the most sacred monument in Laos, stop for photographs at Patuxai, Vientiane’s own Arc de Triomphe.

Meals: Breakfast. Accommodation: Hotel in Vientiane.

Day 07:Vientiane – Fly to Pakse – Tad Lo

South by air to the cool, green Bolaven Plateau, famous for its coffee.

Morning

After breakfast, take an early flight to Pakse.

Afternoon

Drive up onto the Bolaven Plateau, where coffee and tea plantations cover the hills, stopping on the way at villages of the Lao Theung, the upland peoples of the south. Continue to Tad Lo, a peaceful spot beside a waterfall, for the night.

Meals: Breakfast. Accommodation: Hotel in Tad Lo.

Day 08:Tad Lo – Wat Phu – Don Khong

A ferry across the Mekong to an ancient Khmer temple, then south to the islands.

Morning

Drive back via Pakse and cross the Mekong on a local ferry to Champasak. Here you visit Wat Phu, a sacred Khmer temple climbing the slopes of a mountain, older than Angkor Wat and once on the eastern edge of the Khmer world.

Afternoon

Later, a scenic drive and another ferry bring you to Don Khong, one of the largest inhabited islands in the Si Phan Don area. The island is best explored by bicycle along the quiet road that circles it.

Meals: Breakfast. Accommodation: Hotel in Don Khong.

Day 09:Don Khong – Discover the 4,000 Islands

A day on the water in Si Phan Don, the 4,000 Islands, where the Mekong spreads out wider than anywhere else on its course.

Morning

Explore the islands by boat. In the rainy season the river here can be more than 12 kilometres across, and as the water falls, countless small islands emerge, which gives the region its name.

Afternoon

Long before you see them, you hear the roar of the Khone Phapheng and Li Phi falls, where the whole river crashes over the rocks. Near Ban Hang Khon, look out for the rare Irrawaddy river dolphin, and see the old locomotive, railway and bridge built by the French to carry cargo around the rapids and waterfalls.

Meals: Breakfast. Accommodation: Hotel in Don Khong.

Day 10:Don Khong – Pakse – Departure
