Detailed Itinerary:

Here is how the four days unfold, from a family game of petanque on your first afternoon to a slow boat back down the Mekong. Every part of it can be adjusted: add a night where you want to linger, swap an activity or change your hotel class, and we will shape the plan around you.

Day 01:Luang Prabang Arrival – Old Town

Welcome to Luang Prabang, the old royal capital of Laos, a UNESCO World Heritage town of golden temples and French colonial houses on a peninsula where the Nam Khan River meets the Mekong.

Arrival

Once you have cleared immigration and customs, your guide and driver are waiting to take you to your hotel to check in, with time to rest before the afternoon.

Late afternoon

Your guide collects you for a game of petanque with local players, a favourite pastime in Laos since the French era, with drinks and snacks as you get to know the easy-going Lao way of life. As the sun begins to set, climb the 328 steps to the top of Mount Phousi for a panoramic view over the town, the rivers and the green hills beyond.

Evening

Walk down to the Mekong side of town for the night market, where hill tribe families sell textiles, handicrafts and souvenirs. Dinner is at a popular garden restaurant, a great introduction to Lao food that also caters well for western tastes and children, before you return to your hotel.

Meals: Dinner. Accommodation: Hotel in Luang Prabang.

Day 02:Luang Prabang – Kuang Si Waterfalls – Elephant Experience

Turquoise waterfalls in the morning and an afternoon walking with elephants.

Morning

Drive through the peaceful countryside to the Kuang Si Waterfalls, a series of cascading turquoise pools in lush forest. Swim in the cool water, relax on the rocks by the lower pools, or take the steep but rewarding trail to the top of the falls. Next door, the bear rescue centre cares for Asiatic black bears saved from poachers and shows the work being done to protect them. Nearby, a butterfly park is full of colourful butterflies drifting among tropical flowers.

Midday

Return to Luang Prabang for lunch at a place of your choice.

Afternoon

Head out of town to the village of Xieng Lom and the elephant camp of MandaLao. Over coffee or tea, your guide explains how elephants behave and how best to be around them. Cross the Nam Khan River to meet the elephants and their mahouts, feed them healthy snacks, and watch as they bathe in the river with their keepers. Then walk alongside them through Lao gardens and into the jungle along the Huay Nok stream, wading through its cool water before saying goodbye.

Evening

The evening is yours at leisure.

Good to know: MandaLao follows World Animal Protection guidelines, so guests do not bathe or ride the elephants. The elephants choose whether to enter the river, and only their mahouts wash them.

Meals: Breakfast. Accommodation: Hotel in Luang Prabang.

Day 03:Luang Prabang – Alms Giving – Pak Ou Caves – Kamu Lodge

A dawn ritual, a riverside temple and a boat up the Mekong to a tented camp among the rice fields.

Early morning

Join the morning alms giving, as lines of saffron-robed monks walk silently through the streets to receive offerings of sticky rice, and receive their blessing in return.

Morning

Visit Wat Xieng Thong, the most photographed temple in Luang Prabang, with its sweeping roofs and walls glittering with glass mosaic. A short walk brings you to the pier, where your boat is waiting to carry you up the Mekong. Stop at the Pak Ou Caves, two caves in a towering limestone cliff above the river, filled with thousands of Buddha statues of every size, many of them gold lacquered.

Midday

Continue upriver for about an hour to Kamu Lodge for lunch. Its private canvas tents sit under thatched roofs, furnished with bamboo and wood, each with its own bathroom and solar-heated water.

Afternoon

Choose from a range of activities around the lodge: plant or harvest rice in the surrounding fields, pan for gold or learn traditional fishing techniques on the Mekong, or visit the local village to meet the families who live there.

Evening

Dinner is served at the lodge, and the night is spent under canvas to the sounds of the river.

Good to know: gold panning is possible from January to June. The alms giving is a sacred ritual: dress modestly, keep a respectful distance and do not use flash.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner. Accommodation: Kamu Lodge tented camp, on the Mekong near Luang Prabang.

Day 04:Kamu Lodge – Luang Prabang – Departure

A slow morning by the river, then a boat back down the Mekong.

Morning

After breakfast at the lodge, relax or visit the nearby village with your guide before checking out late in the morning.

Afternoon

After lunch at the lodge, board the boat for the three-hour cruise back to Luang Prabang, watching village life drift by on the riverbanks.

Departure

Spend any remaining time on last-minute shopping or sightseeing before your transfer to the airport for your onward flight.
