Detailed Itinerary:

A journey of winding mountain roads, small towns and border villages, with a picnic in the jungle and nights in a national park and in Mae Sariang. It starts and ends in Chiang Mai, so it pairs easily with a stay in the city. Every part of it can be adjusted: add a night, swap a visit or change the hotel class, and we will shape the plan around you.

Day 01:Chiang Mai - Mae Wang National Park - Ob Luang National Park

From Chiang Mai into the hills, to strange earth pillars and a night in a national park.

Morning

Your guide collects you from your hotel in Chiang Mai for the drive to Mae Wang National Park, near the small, quiet town of Doi Lo. Here you visit Pha Chor and Kew Sua Ten, a landscape of eroded earth pillars and cliffs, sometimes called Thailand’s Grand Canyon. The ground here is thought to be old sediment from the Ping River, carved over time into strange shapes, and the pillars at Pha Chor stand around thirty metres high.

Midday

Explore the area on a short trek of about two hours, then sit down to a picnic lunch in the forest.

Afternoon

Drive on to Ob Luang National Park, where you spend the night inside the park.

Good to know: Ob Luang National Park closes every year from 1 March to 30 April, so this itinerary needs a different first night in those months.

Meals: Lunch. Accommodation: Lodge in Ob Luang National Park, on the road to Mae Sariang.

Day 02:Ob Luang National Park - Mae Sariang

Country roads and roadside markets to a quiet valley town.

Morning

Continue to Mae Sariang, a charming, little-visited town in Mae Hong Son province, set in a lovely valley of rice fields. Along the way, stop where villagers sell vegetables, mushrooms and, depending on the season, insects by the roadside.

Midday

Visit the town’s best-known temples, including Wat Chom Thong, which stands on a high point at the edge of town with a wonderful view over the river valley and countryside. Lunch is served in Mae Sariang.

Afternoon

Check in, then wander the town on your own and meet the local community.

Evening

Dinner is included tonight.

Day 03:Mae Sariang - Salween National Park - Myanmar Border

Along the Salween River, where Thailand meets Myanmar.

Midday

Take a boat down the Salween River, which forms the border between Myanmar and Thailand, past impressive mountains and riverbanks. Stop at Ban Tha Ta Fang, a Karen village, then return by boat to Mae Sam Laep for lunch.

Drive back to Mae Sariang and relax for the rest of the day.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch. Accommodation: Hotel in Mae Sariang.

Day 04:Mae Sariang - Mae Chaem - Doi Inthanon - Chiang Mai

Morning

Set off back towards Chiang Mai on a beautiful scenic drive, stopping at Mae Chaem Hot Spring. Continue through the farmland of the Hmong hill tribe, pausing to see farmers at work in their fields.

Afternoon

Lunch is served at a local restaurant on the way. Then visit Doi Inthanon National Park, home to Thailand’s highest mountain at 2,565 metres, and explore Wachirathan Waterfall and Mae Klang Waterfall, two of the park’s most spectacular falls.
