Tour Destinations:

Detailed Itinerary:

From Lanzhou you head southwest past the Bingling caves to Xiahe, then south to Langmusi and the valleys of Diebu and Zhagana. The loop closes via Hezuo and the Milarepa Buddha Pavilion before returning to Lanzhou. Every part of it can be adjusted: add a night, swap a visit or change the hotel class, and we will shape the plan around you.

Day 01:Arrival In Lanzhou

Arrive on the Yellow River and look over the city from White Pagoda Mountain.

Arrival

Your private guide and driver meet you on arrival in Lanzhou and take you to your hotel. The capital of Gansu stretches along the banks of the Yellow River, and was long an important stop on the Silk Road.

Afternoon

Walk up through White Pagoda Mountain Park, on the north bank of the river, to the small white pagoda at the top. From here the city spreads out below you, with the Yellow River and its iron bridge winding through it.

Evening

Spend the evening at leisure, and do try a bowl of Lanzhou beef noodles, the city’s famous dish.

Accommodation: Hotel in Lanzhou.

Day 02:Lanzhou - Bingling Temple - Xiahe

A boat ride across a reservoir to ancient Buddhist caves, then the road to the monastery town of Xiahe.

Morning

Drive about two and a half hours to the Liujiaxia Reservoir on the Yellow River, then take a boat of around an hour through a landscape of jagged sandstone cliffs to Bingling Temple.

Midday

Explore the Bingling Temple Grottoes, a series of Buddhist caves and niches carved into the canyon walls from the fourth century onwards, part of the Silk Roads UNESCO World Heritage Site. The great seated Buddha carved into the cliff is the centrepiece.

Afternoon

Return by boat and continue by road to Xiahe, about three and a half hours, climbing from the river valleys onto the grasslands of Gannan. Arrive in the evening at your hotel.

Good to know: Xiahe and the rest of this journey sit at high altitude on the edge of the Tibetan Plateau. Take it gently, drink plenty of water and tell your guide if you feel unwell.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch. Accommodation: Hotel in Xiahe.

Day 03:Labrang Monastery And Sangke Grassland

A great Tibetan monastery, open grasslands and a visit to a Tibetan family.

Morning

Visit Labrang Monastery, one of the six great monasteries of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism and a major centre of learning. Explore its assembly halls, colleges and chapels, and join pilgrims on the long kora path, spinning the hundreds of prayer wheels that line its outer walls.

Afternoon

Drive up to the Sangke Grassland, a wide summer pasture outside Xiahe where yak and sheep graze. Visit a Tibetan family, share butter tea and learn about life on the grassland. Then stop at the ancient town of Bajiao, whose old walls form an unusual eight-pointed shape.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch. Accommodation: Hotel in Xiahe.

Day 04:Xiahe - Langmusi: Kirti Monastery And Namo Gorge

A drive south to a monastery town on the Gansu and Sichuan border and a soft trek into a gorge.

Morning

Drive about three and a half hours south across the grasslands to Langmusi, a small town that straddles the border of Gansu and Sichuan. Visit Kirti Monastery, on the Sichuan side, with its golden roofs set against the hills.

Afternoon

Take a soft trek along the Namo Gorge, a narrow limestone canyon with a small cave shrine and a stream that is said to be one of the sources of the Bailong River.

Late afternoon

If it is taking place, watch a local horse racing event. There is also the option of a short horse ride on the grassland if you wish.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch. Accommodation: Hotel in Langmusi (Xiahe).

Day 05:Langmusi - Sertri Monastery - Diebu

A monastery across the border and a scenic drive into the valleys of Diebu.

Morning

Visit Sertri Monastery on the Gansu side of Langmusi, whose golden-roofed hall stands above the town. Walk up the hill behind the monastery for wide views, passing the sky burial site, a place of great importance in Tibetan funeral tradition, which your guide will ask you to observe quietly and respectfully from a distance.

Afternoon

Drive about two and a half hours through mountains and valleys to Diebu, a scenic region of forests, rivers and Tibetan villages. The road follows deep valleys where wooden houses sit beside barley fields and the river runs fast and clear.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch. Accommodation: Hotel in Diebu (Xiahe).

Day 06:Zhagana Light Hike - Hezuo

A gentle walk beneath the stone peaks of Zhagana, then a long drive back north.

Morning

Explore Zhagana, a valley of Tibetan villages set beneath a great wall of grey limestone peaks, often compared to a stone city. Take a light hike through the fields and along the valley, with wooden houses, prayer flags and the mountains all around. Pause at a viewpoint above the valley to see the whole stone ridge at once.

Afternoon

Drive about five hours north to Hezuo, the capital of the Gannan region, with stops along the way to stretch your legs and enjoy the views.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch. Accommodation: Hotel in Hezuo (Xiahe).

Day 07:Milarepa Buddha Pavilion - Lanzhou

A soaring nine-storey hall in Hezuo, then the road back to Lanzhou.

Morning

Visit the Milarepa Buddha Pavilion, a tall tower-like temple dedicated to Milarepa, the great Tibetan poet and saint. Climb through its nine floors, each filled with statues and paintings, to the top for a view over Hezuo.

Afternoon

Drive about three hours back to Lanzhou, descending from the grasslands into the Yellow River valley, and enjoy the evening at leisure.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch. Accommodation: Hotel in Lanzhou.
