Bến TreMekong Delta, Southern Vietnam10.24° N · 106.38° E
Coconut country, just a couple of hours from Ho Chi Minh City, with palm-lined canals, small workshops and quiet lanes. Here is what to expect and how to make the most of it.
Ben Tre is a province of river islands between branches of the Mekong, and it is covered in coconut palms. Coconuts shape everything here, from the candy and oil made in family workshops to the mats, bowls and roofs crafted from the trees. Narrow canals shaded by water palm run between villages, and small boats are still part of everyday life.
Because it is only about two hours from Ho Chi Minh City, Ben Tre is the most popular choice for a first taste of the delta. On a day trip you can ride a sampan through the canals, visit workshops, cycle quiet lanes and eat lunch in an orchard. Stay a night in a homestay and it becomes far more peaceful once the day visitors leave.
Every journey below is private and tailor-made, so you can see Ben Tre on a day trip or stay overnight on the way deeper into the delta.

The experiences our travellers enjoy most, in order of what we would not miss.
Glide along narrow waterways shaded by water palm in a small rowing boat, the quietest way to see the region.
See families make coconut candy, oil and handicrafts by hand, and taste the candy warm, before it is wrapped.
Ride flat lanes and small concrete bridges past orchards, rice fields and village homes, stopping wherever looks interesting. It is easy riding, suitable for most ages.
Sit down to a home-cooked delta lunch in a fruit garden, often with elephant ear fish wrapped in rice paper and fruit picked that morning.
Many routes include a boat between Ben Tre and the islands near My Tho, passing fishing boats and river traffic.

Customise My TripBen Tre is reached by road from Ho Chi Minh City across the Rach Mieu Bridge. It also works as a stop on the way to Can Tho or Vinh Long.
Places that pair well with Ben Tre, with approximate travel times.
December to April is dry and the easiest time for boats and cycling. From May to November expect short afternoon showers, but mornings are often clear and the orchards are full of fruit.

Ask us on WhatsAppYes, for an easy and pleasant taste of the delta close to Saigon. It is best with a private guide who avoids the busiest stops. For floating markets, go on to Can Tho. A night in a homestay shows a much quieter side of the province once day visitors leave.
Yes. It is about two hours each way by road, so a day trip gives you around five hours for boats, workshops and cycling. A homestay night makes it more relaxed. Leave early to avoid traffic leaving the city and to enjoy the canals in the cooler morning.
Not one worth planning around. The main floating market in the delta today is Cai Rang near Can Tho, best seen at dawn after a night in the city. Ben Tre is better for canals, coconut workshops, cycling and village life, which it does very well.
