Cần ThơMekong Delta, Southern Vietnam10.03° N · 105.78° E
The largest city in the Mekong Delta and the best base for the Cai Rang floating market at dawn. Here is how to plan your stay, what to see and what to eat.
Can Tho sits on the Hau River, the southern branch of the Mekong, and is the biggest and most important city in the delta. It is a working city of markets, universities and river traffic rather than a pretty heritage town, but it has a relaxed riverfront, good food and, crucially, the Cai Rang floating market just a short boat ride away.
That is why we think of Can Tho as a base rather than a destination in itself. Stay here and you can be on the water at first light, when Cai Rang is at its liveliest, then spend the rest of the day in orchards, villages and canals nearby before an evening stroll on Ninh Kieu wharf. One or two nights is plenty for most travellers, and it fits naturally between Ho Chi Minh City and Chau Doc or Phu Quoc.
Every journey below is private and tailor-made, so you can spend a night in Can Tho as part of a longer trip through the delta.

How our guides use Can Tho as a base for one full day, starting on the water before sunrise.
Leave from the riverfront by boat as the sky lightens, and reach the market while trading is in full swing.
Noodle soup and coffee served from a small boat moored beside the wholesale barges.
Slip into smaller canals and see how fresh rice noodles are made by hand in a family workshop.
Walk or cycle through fruit gardens on the edge of the city, tasting whatever is in season.
A grand old family home where French and Vietnamese styles meet, full of carved wood and antiques.
Stroll the riverside promenade as the bridge lights come on, then sit down to a delta dinner.
The experiences our travellers enjoy most, in order of what we would not miss.
About 6 km from the centre, the delta's largest floating market. Wholesale boats hang samples from tall poles to show what they sell. Go at sunrise.
After the market, switch to a small boat and drift through narrow canals lined with water palm, houses and little bridges.
The city's riverside promenade and park, the place to be in the evening, with views of the river and the Can Tho Bridge in the distance.
Fruit gardens on the edge of the city where you can walk, cycle and taste seasonal fruit straight from the trees.
A late 19th-century home built by a wealthy local family, mixing French and Vietnamese styles, and still cared for by their descendants.
A small Chinese assembly hall on the riverfront, built by the Cantonese community, with incense coils and carved altars.
Family workshops near Cai Rang where rice is turned into hu tieu noodles by hand, steamed, dried and cut.

Ask us on WhatsAppYes, as a base for the Cai Rang floating market and the countryside around it. The city itself has few big sights, so one or two nights is usually enough. Spend your time on the water and in the orchards around it, and enjoy the riverfront in the evening.
Leave by boat around sunrise. The market is busiest from early morning until around eight or nine, and quietens quickly after that as traders move on. Boats from the city take around 30 minutes, so plan to leave your hotel early and have breakfast on the water.
By road it takes about three and a half hours, and our private car journeys usually stop in Ben Tre or Vinh Long on the way. You can also fly to Can Tho from Hanoi and some other cities. The road crosses several big bridges over the Mekong.
One night lets you see Cai Rang at dawn. Two nights give you time for orchards, canals, cycling and a relaxed evening on Ninh Kieu wharf. Many travellers pair one night in Can Tho with a homestay night elsewhere in the delta, or continue to Chau Doc.
It is possible but long, with around seven hours of driving, and you will reach Cai Rang after the main trading has finished. We strongly suggest staying at least one night. With a night here, you can enjoy the market at its best and travel on without rushing.
