Welcome To Cao Bang

Waterfalls And Quiet Valleys On The Border

Cao Bang is a mountainous province on Vietnam's north-eastern border with China, a landscape of sharp limestone peaks, emerald rivers and green rice valleys farmed by Tay, Nung, Hmong and Dao communities. Its geology earned it the Non Nuoc Cao Bang UNESCO Global Geopark listing in 2018, and it sees only a fraction of the visitors who go to Sapa or Ha Long.

The headline sight is Ban Gioc Waterfall, a wide, tiered cascade on the Quay Son River that marks the border itself. Nearby is Nguom Ngao Cave, with long chambers of stalactites, and to the north-west lies Pac Bo, where Ho Chi Minh returned to Vietnam in 1941 after thirty years abroad. The drives between them, through quiet valleys and over mountain passes, are a highlight in their own right.

Cao Bang is far from Hanoi, and that remoteness is both its charm and its challenge. It makes most sense as part of a longer northern loop, combined with Ha Giang to the west or Ba Be Lake to the south, rather than as a quick trip on its own.

Our Honest Take

Is Cao Bang Worth Visiting?

What We Love

  • Ban Gioc Waterfall in full flow, with bamboo rafts drifting to the foot of the falls.
  • Peaceful, little-visited valleys and villages that feel like the north before mass tourism.
  • A natural link between Ha Giang and Ba Be Lake for a longer, quieter northern circuit.

Good To Know

  • It is a long way from anywhere: about 6 to 7 hours from Hanoi to Cao Bang city, then about 2 more to Ban Gioc.
  • The waterfall is much smaller and less impressive in the dry months, roughly December to April.
  • Accommodation near the falls and in the countryside is mostly simple guesthouses and homestays.

Cao Bang Travel FAQs

Quick answers from our local team. Anything else, just ask your travel specialist.

Ask us on WhatsApp
Is Ban Gioc Waterfall worth the trip?

Yes, if you combine it with the wider Cao Bang region or a northern loop. As a single day trip from Hanoi it is far too long. Visit between August and November, when the falls are at their fullest.

How many days do I need in Cao Bang?

Two to three nights lets you see Ban Gioc, Nguom Ngao Cave and Pac Bo without rushing. Add more if you are linking it with Ha Giang or Ba Be Lake, which most of our travellers do.

How do I get from Hanoi to Cao Bang?

By road, about 6 to 7 hours to Cao Bang city, with Ban Gioc about 2 hours further. There is no airport or railway. A private car with driver makes the long mountain drives much easier.

Can I combine Cao Bang with Ha Giang?

Yes. A long but scenic road links Meo Vac in Ha Giang with Cao Bang via Bao Lac. It makes a natural extension of the Ha Giang loop, ideally with an overnight stop on the way.

When is the best time to visit Ban Gioc Waterfall?

August to November, when the falls are full and the rice is green or golden. In the dry season, roughly December to April, the flow drops sharply and the falls are far less impressive.
