A quiet northern town of horse carts, teak temples and rooster-painted ceramics, an easy stop between Chiang Mai and Sukhothai. Here is what to see and how long to stay.
Lampang is a provincial town on the Wang River, about an hour and a half south-east of Chiang Mai. It grew wealthy in the late 19th and early 20th centuries from the teak trade, and the money built handsome wooden houses and Burmese-style temples. It is also the only town in Thailand where colourful horse-drawn carriages are still a familiar sight, now mainly for visitors.
The main reason to stop is Wat Phra That Lampang Luang, outside town, one of the finest Lanna temples in the north, with an open-sided wooden hall and a golden chedi inside old brick walls. Lampang is also famous for its ceramics, especially the bowls painted with a rooster, and its riverside walking street comes alive on weekend evenings.
