Welcome To Sukhothai

Where The First Thai Kingdom Began

In the 13th century Sukhothai became the capital of the first great Thai kingdom, and Thais still see it as the birthplace of their art, writing and nation. Its graceful walking Buddhas and lotus-bud chedis set a style that influenced temples across the country. Together with nearby Si Satchanalai and Kamphaeng Phet, the old city was listed by UNESCO in 1991.

Today the Sukhothai Historical Park is a peaceful landscape of brick and stucco ruins, moats and lotus ponds, about 12 km from the modern town. It is flat and spacious, which makes it perfect for cycling, and it sees far fewer visitors than Ayutthaya. Early morning and late afternoon, when the light is soft and the air is cooler, are magical.

Sukhothai sits roughly halfway between Bangkok and Chiang Mai, so it makes a natural overnight stop on a road journey north. Spend one night to see the central zone, two if you want to add the outer temples and Si Satchanalai.

Our Honest Take

Is Sukhothai Worth Visiting?

What We Love

  • It is calm and green, with far fewer crowds than Ayutthaya.
  • Cycling between ruins and ponds in the early morning is one of the most peaceful experiences in Thailand.
  • The great seated Buddha at Wat Si Chum, glimpsed through a narrow opening, is unforgettable.

Good To Know

  • It is a long way from Bangkok, so it works best as a stop on a road trip north rather than a special journey.
  • The modern town is plain and practical. Many travellers prefer to stay near the historical park.
  • If ruins are not your thing, one night is enough.

Quick answers from our local team. Anything else, just ask your travel specialist.

Ask us on WhatsApp
Is Sukhothai worth visiting?

Yes, if you enjoy history or simply peaceful places. It is quieter and more spacious than Ayutthaya, and cycling among the ruins is a highlight for many travellers. It works best as a stop on the way between Bangkok and Chiang Mai.

How many days do I need in Sukhothai?

One night is enough to see the central zone at sunset and sunrise. Two nights lets you add the northern and western temples and a trip to Si Satchanalai.

Sukhothai or Ayutthaya?

Ayutthaya is closer to Bangkok and easier as a day trip. Sukhothai is older, calmer and set in parkland rather than a busy town. On a road trip north, you can see both.

Can I cycle in Sukhothai Historical Park?

Yes, and it is the best way to explore. The park is flat and the main zones are linked by quiet roads. Go early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday heat.

Where should I stay in Sukhothai?

Most travellers prefer to stay near the historical park, where small hotels and guesthouses sit among gardens and rice fields, close to the ruins for sunrise and sunset. The modern town is about 12 km away and is more practical than charming.

When is Loy Krathong in Sukhothai?

Loy Krathong falls on the full moon of the twelfth Thai lunar month, usually in November. The historical park holds a large festival with lights, performances and candlelit offerings floated on the ponds. Book early, as it is a busy time.
