The main city of Nghe An province and a transit stop on the road through central Vietnam, close to Ho Chi Minh's home village at Kim Lien. Here is what is worth a stop.
Vinh is the capital of Nghe An province, on the coastal plain roughly halfway between Hanoi and Hue. Heavily damaged during the wars of the 20th century, it was largely rebuilt and today is a modern, practical city with wide streets and little that draws travellers in its own right.
Its importance for visitors is Kim Lien, a short drive away, where Ho Chi Minh was born in 1890 at Hoang Tru, his mother's family home, and spent part of his childhood in the neighbouring village of Sen. The simple thatched houses are well kept and visited by many Vietnamese families. Honestly, Vinh is a transit city: a stop to break the long journey between the north and Phong Nha or Hue.
Our private, tailor-made journeys can stop at Kim Lien on the road between the north and Phong Nha or Hue.

A few remains of the old provincial citadel survive in the city, a quick stop if you are staying overnight.
A long beach about half an hour from the city, lively in summer with Vietnamese holidaymakers and seafood stalls.

February to April and September to November are the most comfortable months. Summer is very hot, with dry westerly winds, and the coast is crowded. Autumn brings the main rains and occasional storms.
