Welcome To Putao

Myanmar's Far North, Where The Himalayas Begin

Putao is a small town in a wide valley in the far north of Kachin State, surrounded by forested foothills that rise towards the snow peaks of the eastern Himalayas, including Hkakabo Razi, often cited as the highest mountain in Southeast Asia. There is no road connection most visitors could use, so it is reached by air.

The area is home to Lisu, Rawang and Kachin communities, and visits centre on walking: across bamboo and cane suspension bridges, along rivers and up to hill villages and viewpoints. It is a destination for adventurous travellers with time and patience, and visits need special permits arranged well in advance.

Our Honest Take

Is Putao Worth Visiting?

What We Love

  • Real remoteness: clear rivers, forested mountains and snow peaks on the horizon in the dry season.
  • Walking between villages with a local guide, crossing suspension bridges and meeting communities that see very few visitors.

Good To Know

  • Foreign visitors need special permits arranged well in advance, and flights are few and can be cancelled at short notice. Build in spare days.
  • Access depends on the current situation in Kachin State and official travel advice. It is frequently not possible, and we will tell you honestly when that is the case.
