ပူတာအိုKachin State, Northern Myanmar
A remote valley town in Myanmar's far north, at the edge of the Himalayas. Here is what to expect, and the honest truth about permits and flights.
Putao is a small town in a wide valley in the far north of Kachin State, surrounded by forested foothills that rise towards the snow peaks of the eastern Himalayas, including Hkakabo Razi, often cited as the highest mountain in Southeast Asia. There is no road connection most visitors could use, so it is reached by air.
The area is home to Lisu, Rawang and Kachin communities, and visits centre on walking: across bamboo and cane suspension bridges, along rivers and up to hill villages and viewpoints. It is a destination for adventurous travellers with time and patience, and visits need special permits arranged well in advance.
Any visit to Putao is private and tailor-made, and planned only when our local team confirms that permits and flights are workable.

Visit hillside villages with a local guide to learn about daily life, farming and crafts in the far north.
For fit walkers with time, guided treks lead deeper into the foothills, staying in very simple village accommodation.
Clear, fast rivers that feed the Mali River, a source of the Ayeyarwady, run through the valley. Lovely for a quiet day out.
A small market where people from the surrounding villages trade produce, tools and cloth.

November to March is the best time, dry and clear, with the best mountain views; nights are cold. April can still be pleasant. The monsoon from May to October brings heavy rain, swollen rivers and frequent flight disruption.
