Welcome To Ha Giang

The Wild Road To Vietnam's Far North

Ha Giang is Vietnam's northernmost region, a borderland of grey limestone peaks, deep river canyons and terraced fields clinging to impossible slopes. It is home to Hmong, Dao, Tay, Lo Lo and other ethnic communities whose markets, clothing and houses still shape the landscape. For many travellers it is the most memorable part of the whole country.

Most people come for the Ha Giang loop, a circuit of mountain roads from Ha Giang city through Quan Ba, Yen Minh, Dong Van and Meo Vac and back. The highlights are the views: the Heaven Gate over the Twin Mountains, the Dong Van Karst Plateau, a UNESCO Global Geopark, and the cliff-edge road over Ma Pi Leng Pass above the jade-green Nho Que River.

Be realistic before you go. Getting here takes most of a day from Hanoi, the roads are steep and winding, and days on the loop involve several hours on the road. Done at a sensible pace, by private car or with an experienced local rider, it is worth every hour.

Our Honest Take

Is Ha Giang Worth Visiting?

What We Love

  • Some of the most spectacular road scenery in Southeast Asia, from Heaven Gate to Ma Pi Leng Pass.
  • Colourful weekly markets where Hmong, Dao and Lo Lo families come down from the hills to trade.
  • A real sense of remoteness, with stone-walled villages and terraces that feel far from mass tourism.

Good To Know

  • Expect long days on steep, winding roads. Anyone prone to car sickness should bring medication and allow extra time.
  • Self-riding is risky: accidents happen every season, and many travel insurers will not cover you without a valid licence. Riding pillion with an experienced local driver or going by car is much safer.
  • Accommodation is mostly simple guesthouses and homestays, and the loop is now busy with backpacker groups in peak months, especially around Dong Van.

8 Best Things To Do In Ha Giang

The experiences our travellers enjoy most, in order of what we would not miss.

  1. 01

    Ma Pi Leng Pass

The loop's most famous stretch, a road cut into the cliffs between Dong Van and Meo Vac, with the Nho Que River far below. Stop at the viewpoints rather than shooting from the saddle.

  2. 02

    Quan Ba Heaven Gate

The first big viewpoint of the loop, looking over the Quan Ba valley and the rounded Twin Mountains. Best in clear morning light.

  3. 03

    Nho Que River by boat

Drop down into the canyon below Ma Pi Leng for a boat trip between towering cliffs, a different view of the scenery you have been riding above.

  4. 04

    Dong Van old quarter

A small square of old clay and timber houses with tiled roofs at the heart of the karst plateau, quiet in the evening and lively on market day.

  5. 05

    Lung Cu Flag Tower

A flag tower on a hilltop close to Vietnam's northernmost point, reached by steps with wide views over the border hills and Lo Lo villages.

  6. 06

    The Hmong King's Palace

The early 20th century residence of the Vuong family at Sa Phin, a mix of Chinese and local styles set in a quiet valley.

  7. 07

    Sunday markets

Dong Van, Meo Vac and other towns hold weekly markets where hill communities trade livestock, cloth and food. Plan your loop around one if you can.

  8. 08

    Buckwheat flower season

In October and November the slopes turn pink and white with buckwheat flowers, the most popular, and busiest, time on the loop.

Ha Giang Travel FAQs

Quick answers from our local team. Anything else, just ask your travel specialist.

Ask us on WhatsApp
How many days do I need for the Ha Giang loop?

Four days on the loop is ideal, plus travel time from Hanoi on either side. Three days is possible but means longer hours on the road each day and less time at viewpoints and markets.

Is it safe to ride the Ha Giang loop by motorbike?

The roads are steep, narrow and shared with trucks, and accidents involving inexperienced riders are common. Unless you are a confident, licensed rider, go by car or ride pillion with an experienced local easy rider. Check that your travel insurance covers motorbikes.

Car or motorbike for the Ha Giang loop?

A private car is more comfortable, safer in rain and better for families or anyone who gets tired easily. An easy rider gives you the open-air experience and more flexibility on narrow roads. Some of our travellers mix the two, with a car following the bikes.

How do I get from Hanoi to Ha Giang?

By road, about 300 km and roughly 6 hours. There is no airport or railway. Most travellers leave Hanoi in the morning and spend the first night in Ha Giang city before starting the loop.

When is the best time to visit Ha Giang?

September to November for clear views, harvest colours and buckwheat flowers, and March to April for spring blossom. Summer brings heavy rain and landslide risk, and winter can be very cold and foggy in the mountains.

Is Ha Giang worth it compared to Sapa?

They are different. Sapa is easier to reach and best for trekking among rice terraces. Ha Giang is more remote, with bigger, wilder landscapes seen mostly from the road. If you have four or five days and do not mind long drives, Ha Giang is unforgettable.
