Snow Peaks, Glaciers And Tibetan Villages Beyond Chengdu

West of Chengdu, the Sichuan basin rises sharply into the mountains of the eastern Tibetan plateau. This is a region of high passes, deep river valleys, snow peaks and grasslands, home to Tibetan and other communities with their own villages, monasteries and festivals. It is one of the most rewarding road-trip regions in China, and much of it can be reached within a long day's drive of Chengdu.

A classic loop takes in Mount Siguniang, whose main peak rises to about 6,250 metres, then the stone watchtowers and painted houses of Danba, the open grasslands and monastery of Tagong, and the glacier of Hailuogou on the slopes of Mount Gongga. Distances are long and altitudes high, so a slow pace, a good driver and a flexible plan make all the difference.

Our Honest Take

Is Western Sichuan Worth Visiting?

What We Love

  • Huge mountain scenery on a scale that feels like Tibet, yet reachable from Chengdu without flights.
  • Tibetan villages, monasteries and grasslands where daily life continues at its own pace.

Good To Know

  • Much of the route is above 3,000 metres, and Tagong is around 3,700 metres, so altitude sickness is a real risk; ascend gradually and rest.
  • Mountain roads are long and can close after landslides in the summer rains or snow in winter, so itineraries need spare time.

Things To Do

Things To Do In Western Sichuan

The experiences our travellers enjoy most, in order of what we would not miss.

  1. 01

    Mount Siguniang

The four peaks of Siguniang tower above Rilong town. Walk or ride into the Shuangqiao or Changping valleys for meadows, forests and close views of the snow peaks.

  2. 02

    Danba villages and watchtowers

In the Dadu River valley, Jiaju village scatters painted Tibetan houses across a hillside, while ancient stone watchtowers rise above Suopo. Stay overnight in a village house.

  3. 03

    Tagong grasslands and monastery

Wide high grasslands with grazing yaks, Tagong Monastery and views of the snow peak of Zhara Lhatse on clear days. Expect thin air and cold mornings.

  4. 04

    Hailuogou glacier

On the eastern side of Mount Gongga, a cable car lifts you to views over one of the lowest-lying glaciers in Asia, flowing down into forest. Clear mornings are best.

  5. 05

    Day hikes and riding

Gentle to moderate walks in the Siguniang valleys and around Tagong, or horse riding with local herders, suit active travellers once acclimatised, with routes chosen to match your fitness.

Western Sichuan Travel FAQs

Quick answers from our local team. Anything else, just ask your travel specialist.

Ask us on WhatsApp
How many days do I need for Western Sichuan?

Plan at least five to seven days for a loop from Chengdu covering Siguniang, Danba, Tagong and Hailuogou. Distances are long and roads winding, and you need time to acclimatise to the altitude. A shorter trip of two or three days can cover Siguniang alone.

Is altitude sickness a problem in Western Sichuan?

It can be. Siguniang and Danba are moderate, but Tagong and some passes are above 3,500 metres. Ascend gradually, drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol on the first nights and rest if you feel unwell. Speak to your doctor before travelling if you have heart or lung conditions.

Do I need a permit for Western Sichuan?

No special Tibet permit is needed for Siguniang, Danba, Tagong or Hailuogou, which are in Sichuan province. Carry your passport at all times for hotel registration and road checkpoints. Some remote areas can occasionally restrict access, so we check current conditions before you travel.

When is the best time to visit Western Sichuan?

September and October are usually best, with clearer skies and autumn colour, followed by late May and June. July and August bring rain, cloud and landslide risk. Winter can be beautifully clear but very cold, and some high passes may close after snow.
