A large north-west province of plateaus, tea hills and Thai villages, with the town of Son La as a stopover on the way to Dien Bien Phu. Here is what is worth seeing and where to stop.
Son La is a large, mountainous province in Vietnam's north-west, home to many Thai communities along with Hmong, Muong and others. Its most popular corner is the Moc Chau plateau, a cool upland of tea hills, orchards and dairy farms a few hours from Hanoi, famous in Vietnam for its plum and peach blossom in early spring and white mustard flowers in winter.
Son La town, further west, is a modest provincial capital and a practical overnight stop on the long road to Dien Bien Phu. Its main sight is the old French colonial prison, now a museum. Honestly, for most travellers the province is something you pass through, and Moc Chau is the part worth slowing down for.
