Indonesia's sprawling capital, where most journeys begin or connect. Here is what is worth seeing if you have a day, and how to make a stopover easy.
Jakarta is one of the largest cities in Southeast Asia and the political and business centre of Indonesia. Most travellers pass through on their way to Yogyakarta, Bali, Borneo or the eastern islands, and that is honestly the right way to see it: a night or a long stopover rather than a stay of several days.
Given a day, there is more here than its reputation suggests. Kota Tua, the old Dutch quarter of Batavia, has colonial buildings and museums around Fatahillah Square, and the old harbour of Sunda Kelapa still has traditional wooden sailing ships. In the centre, the National Monument, Istiqlal Mosque and the cathedral opposite it tell the story of the modern nation and its many faiths.
Every journey below is private and tailor-made, so a Jakarta stopover can be as short or as full as you like.

The experiences our travellers enjoy most, in order of what we would not miss.
The old heart of Dutch Batavia, with the former city hall now home to the Jakarta History Museum, plus the Wayang Museum of puppets nearby.
The old port where wooden pinisi schooners still load cargo for the outer islands. Best early in the morning, before the heat.
The tall obelisk at the centre of Merdeka Square, a symbol of independence, with a history museum at its base and city views from the top.
The national mosque, one of the largest in Southeast Asia, faces the neo-Gothic cathedral across the road, a striking picture of religious harmony. Modest dress needed.
Indonesia's main collection of archaeology, ethnography and art from across the islands. Check opening before you go, as parts have been under restoration.

Customise My TripSoekarno-Hatta is Indonesia's main international hub, with flights across the country. An airport rail link also runs to the city. Allow generous time for the drive back to the airport, as traffic can double the journey.
Places that pair well with Jakarta, with approximate travel times.
Jakarta is hot and humid all year. May to September is drier, while the rainy season from roughly November to March can bring heavy downpours and occasional flooding that worsens traffic.

Ask us on WhatsAppAs a one-night stop or long layover, yes. Kota Tua, Sunda Kelapa harbour, Monas and Istiqlal Mosque make a good day. Most travellers then move on quickly to Yogyakarta, Bali or Komodo, which is what we usually suggest.
One night is enough for most travellers. If you arrive early, a private car and guide can cover the old town and the centre in a day without fighting public transport.
Around an hour by car in light traffic, and much longer at rush hour or in heavy rain. Your travel consultant will arrange a private transfer and time your return to the airport with a sensible margin.
