A small market town at the heart of the Dong Van Karst Plateau, a UNESCO Global Geopark. Here is what to see, when the Sunday market runs and how it fits the Ha Giang loop.
Dong Van is a small highland town in the far north of Ha Giang, surrounded by the grey limestone of the Dong Van Karst Plateau. The plateau was recognised as a UNESCO Global Geopark in 2010, and it is a striking landscape: bare rock peaks, maize growing between the stones and Hmong villages with houses built of rammed earth and stone walls.
The town's charm is its old quarter, a small square of clay-walled, tile-roofed houses below a hilltop fort, and its Sunday market, when people from the surrounding hills come to trade. Most travellers spend a night here on the Ha Giang loop, before or after the famous Ma Pi Leng Pass to Meo Vac.
Our private Ha Giang journeys usually spend a night in Dong Van, ideally timed for the Sunday market.
