Welcome To Canggu

Bali's Surf Village That Grew Up Fast

Not long ago Canggu was a scattering of villages and rice fields on the coast north of Seminyak, known mostly to surfers. Today it is one of the most popular parts of Bali, with a long run of cafés, restaurants, boutiques, gyms and beach clubs between Berawa, Batu Bolong, Echo Beach and Pererenan. It attracts young travellers, families on long stays and many people working remotely.

The appeal is easy to see: dark-sand beaches with consistent waves for learning to surf, sunset gatherings on the sand, and a huge choice of food. The downside is that rapid growth has brought heavy traffic, narrow congested lanes and building sites where rice fields used to be. Pockets of green and a strong village temple life remain, but come for the beach scene and food rather than peace and quiet.

Canggu works best as a short, fun stop rather than your only base. Two to four nights here pairs well with Ubud for culture and with Sidemen, Munduk or the Bukit for quieter days. Stay on the calmer northern edge around Pererenan if you want the food scene without the noise, and plan any day trips early in the morning, before the lanes fill with traffic.

Our Honest Take

Is Canggu Worth Visiting?

What We Love

  • Friendly surf for beginners and improvers at Batu Bolong, with plenty of local instructors.
  • A huge range of cafés and restaurants, especially for healthy breakfasts and plant-based food.
  • Sunsets on the beach, with the whole neighbourhood seemingly out on the sand.

Good To Know

  • Traffic is heavy and the narrow lanes jam at peak times. Short distances can take a long time by car.
  • Construction is everywhere, and many of the rice fields people come to see have been built on.
  • The sea is often rough with strong currents; it is better for surfing than for swimming, especially with children.

Things To Do

8 Best Things To Do In Canggu

The experiences our travellers enjoy most, in order of what we would not miss.

  1. 01

Learn to surf at Batu Bolong

Soft, rolling waves and a long sandy entry make this one of Bali's easiest places to stand up on a board. Take a lesson with a local instructor.

  2. 02

    Sunset at Echo Beach

Watch experienced surfers on the reef break as the sun drops into the ocean. Busy and social in the evening.

  3. 03

    Tanah Lot

The famous sea temple on its rock is about 30 minutes north. Go in the morning for fewer people, or join the sunset crowds.

  4. 04

    Pererenan and Seseh beaches

Quieter stretches of black sand just north of the busiest part of Canggu, good for a long beach walk.

  5. 05

    Rice-field paths

A few walking and cycling paths still cross the remaining paddies between villages. Ask locally which are still open and green.

  6. 06

    Café breakfasts

Canggu is known for long, leisurely breakfasts. Explore beyond the main road for quieter spots.

  7. 07

    Village temples and ceremonies

Behind the cafés, Canggu's banjar communities still hold processions and temple festivals. You may well see one on the road.

  8. 08

    Seminyak for shopping and dinner

A short drive south, Seminyak has more boutiques, galleries and restaurants, with a slightly more grown-up feel.

Canggu Travel FAQs

Quick answers from our local team. Anything else, just ask your travel specialist.

Ask us on WhatsApp
Is Canggu worth visiting?

Yes, if you want surf, cafés and a social beach scene. It is less suited to those looking for traditional Bali or quiet, as traffic and construction are constant. Many travellers enjoy two or three nights here alongside Ubud or the north.

Can you swim in Canggu?

The waves and currents are often strong, so Canggu is better for surfing than swimming. Stay between the flags where lifeguards are present, and choose Nusa Dua, Sanur or Jimbaran for calmer water.

Is Canggu good for beginner surfers?

Yes. Batu Bolong has gentle, rolling waves over a sandy bottom and many surf schools. Take a lesson with a local instructor, and avoid the reef breaks until you are confident.

Canggu or Seminyak?

Canggu is more casual, younger and surf-focused. Seminyak is more established, with beach hotels, shopping and restaurants. Both suffer from traffic, and both make a good short stop between Ubud and the airport.

How far is Canggu from Ubud?

About 1 to 1.5 hours by road, depending on traffic. A private car with driver is the most comfortable way to travel between them.
