The port town on the western tip of Papua that serves as the gateway to Raja Ampat. Here is how to make the connection smoothly and what awaits across the water.
Sorong is a busy port and transit town, and honestly there is little to keep you here. Its importance is what lies beyond: Raja Ampat, a vast archipelago of jungle-covered islands, limestone pinnacles and lagoons. Its reefs are renowned among divers and marine scientists for some of the highest marine biodiversity on earth, with an extraordinary variety of corals and reef fish.
Most travellers arrive by plane, then take a public ferry of around two hours to Waisai, the main town of Raja Ampat, or a boat straight to their island stay. Flight times rarely line up perfectly with the ferries, so a night in Sorong is often the easiest way to make the connection.
Every journey below is private and tailor-made, with flights, ferries and boat transfers lined up so you reach Raja Ampat with as little waiting as possible.
