The flag tower close to Vietnam's northernmost point, a highlight of the Ha Giang loop. Here is what to expect, how long to stop and what else is nearby.
Lung Cu lies at the very top of the map, near the northernmost point of Vietnam in the Ha Giang highlands. Its landmark is the Lung Cu Flag Tower, standing on a hilltop and flying a huge red national flag, reached by a climb of stone steps and a spiral staircase inside the tower. From the top you look over terraced valleys, karst peaks and the border hills.
Honestly, Lung Cu is a stop rather than a stay. It is part of day two on the classic Ha Giang loop, usually combined with the Hmong King's Palace and an evening in Dong Van. What makes it special beyond the tower is the Lo Lo Chai village at its foot, with earthen houses and Lo Lo families who wear some of the most colourful clothing in the north.
Our private Ha Giang journeys include Lung Cu on the loop, with time for the tower and a walk through Lo Lo Chai village.

Climb the steps and spiral stairs to the top for views over Vietnam's northern border. Go early or late in the day for softer light and fewer people.
A Lo Lo village of earthen-walled houses at the foot of the tower. Walk through quietly, or stay the night in a simple homestay.
The drive between Dong Van and Lung Cu crosses the karst plateau, with terraces and Hmong villages along the way.
Usually visited on the same day, the Vuong family residence at Sa Phin is a short drive away on the loop.

Customise My TripLung Cu is reached by road on the Ha Giang loop, usually between Yen Minh and Dong Van. Ha Giang city is a long day's drive from Hanoi, so allow at least four days for the loop.
Places that pair well with Lung Cu, with approximate travel times.
September to November is the best time, with clear views and buckwheat flowers in October and November. March and April bring blossom and mild days. Summer is wet and misty, and winter can be bitterly cold with fog hiding the views.

Ask us on WhatsAppYes, as part of the Ha Giang loop. The views and the Lo Lo village make it a memorable hour or two. It is not worth a separate trip on its own.
The flag tower stands close to Vietnam's northernmost point, which lies a short distance away near the border. The tower is the landmark most visitors come to see.
About an hour for the tower, a little more for a walk through Lo Lo Chai village. Stay overnight in the village if you want a quieter evening away from the main loop towns.
