When To Go

The Best Time To Visit

Spring (April to May) and autumn (September to October) bring the most comfortable weather across most of China. Summers are hot and humid in the east and south, and winters are cold in the north. Yunnan enjoys mild weather for much of the year.

Do I need a visa for China?

Many visitors can now enter China without a visa (as of October 2026):

  • Visa-free for up to 30 days: citizens of the UK and of many European countries can visit for tourism without a visa. For UK passport holders, this scheme currently runs until 31 December 2026.
  • 240-hour visa-free transit: travellers from eligible countries passing through China to a third country can stay up to 10 days in permitted regions when arriving at eligible ports.
  • Other nationalities: may need to apply for a visa before travelling.

Rules change often, so always check with the Chinese embassy before you travel.

How do I pay for things in China?

Mobile payments such as Alipay and WeChat Pay are used almost everywhere, and both now accept many international cards. Set them up before you travel and carry some cash in yuan as a back-up. International cards are accepted in larger hotels.

When is the best time to visit China?

Spring and autumn are ideal. Try to avoid the national holidays in early October and around Chinese New Year, when travel is at its busiest.

When will China itineraries be available?

Our first China journeys are being prepared now. Until then, tell us where you would like to go and a travel specialist will design a private itinerary around you.
